Daring Fireball: Macworld Expo 2009 Predictions

As for what might appear in iPhone OS 3.0, here’s my wish list. First, a new home screen app (a.k.a. SpringBoard), designed from the ground up for a system where users have a few dozen or more extra apps installed. Managing dozens of apps on the iPhone today is simply a pain in the ass. Second, maybe an answer to the question of where the background notification API is — you know, the one we were told at WWDC to expect a few months ago, but which we haven’t heard a word about since. And maybe — pretty please, Mr. Forstall, with sugar on top — copy and paste.

iPhone OS 3.0 demo?!

Macworld?!

I wouldn’t bet on it. ;)

Say goodbye to tedious marshmallow roasting with the Spinmallow

The Spinmallow is a twenty-nine-inch rotating skewer, easily detached from its faux wood handle for easy cleaning. It spins at a “perfect” 92RPM, making for a precision-toasted marshmallow, according to its creators.

[...]

It is $10 whole dollars, or the price of a cord of wood and a handful of green twigs.

It’s has been a while since I actually needed one of these, but even so – they’d be damn handy to have around.

One of those things that you’d almost never use, but would be super handy to have around, like most of the things in my room… :D

The microwave that lets you enjoy hot meals on the move

Hungry motorists can now enjoy hot meals on the move – after a new microwave for cars hit the market.

The 12V appliance plugs into a car’s cigarette lighter and can cook a pie in four minutes flat or heat up a cup of coffee in six.

Xbox 360s, now microwaves.

Whatever will they think of next? Plasma screens? Toilets? Automatic Bacon Dispensers?

Spending a Year Living Like Jesus

It’s one thing to follow the teachings of Jesus, but it’s another thing to try to eat like him, talk like him, look like him, even vote like him.

After reading the book “A Year of Living Biblically,” by A.J. Jacobs, former pastor Ed Dobson decided to devote a year trying to live as Jesus did, based on what is written about him in the Bible and other historical documents.

I think this is Christianity gone too far.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 – the story so far

Early reports say installation times are drastically improved. According to Mac review site TestMac.net, “Right off the bat, [Snow Leopard is] fast. Very fast. A clean installation took about 13 minutes from start to finish, which is a world of difference from the hour or so a clean 10.5 Leopard install takes.”

Mail is down to 91MB in size, whereas before it was 287MB. QuickTime is now 8MB instead of 29MB, TextEdit has been reduced from 22MB to 2MB and the Mac OS X Utility folder has dropped from 468MB to 111.6MB. Similar size reductions are reported in other OS X applications too.

Hmm – looks like Windows 7 is doing the same as Snow Leopard.

Cutting down on resouces, leaving out the bloat, increasing responsiveness and optimising the hell out of the code base, all while not really adding any new features.

Sounds like win to me.

Letter from Apple CEO Steve Jobs

Dear Apple Community,

[...]

Unfortunately, my decision to have Phil deliver the Macworld keynote set off another flurry of rumors about my health, with some even publishing stories of me on my deathbed.

[...]

As many of you know, I have been losing weight throughout 2008. The reason has been a mystery to me and my doctors. A few weeks ago, I decided that getting to the root cause of this and reversing it needed to become my #1 priority.

Fortunately, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause—a hormone imbalance that has been “robbing” me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis.

The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I’ve already begun treatment. But, just like I didn’t lose this much weight and body mass in a week or a month, my doctors expect it will take me until late this Spring to regain it. I will continue as Apple’s CEO during my recovery.

[...]

So now I’ve said more than I wanted to say, and all that I am going to say, about this.

Steve
